Introduction:

"What is she mixed with? Collie?" "Is she part wolf?" I am asked these questions over and over again when I take my Long Coat German Shepherd Dog out in public. After I explain that she is not a mix, they say, "I never knew there were several different coats in the German Shepherd Dog Breed!" The average person only knows the German Shepherd Dog (GSD) that looks like Jerry Lee in the K-9 movies with Jim Belushi. I was an average person, until I went to pick up my second GSD...and she was extra fuzzy and plush. Her father is a long coat, her mother is the *normal* short coat.

We aren't here to debate whether or not the long coat should be allowed in conformation, nor whether breeding them hurts or helps the GSD breed.

This site is only to share the beauty of a wonderful dog.

Some History:

The German Shepherd dog is a German Shepherd dog, is a German Shepherd dog... no matter what coat length it comes in. They are not separate parts of the breed, nor different breeds... they are all German Shepherd Dogs. I am not an expert on the subject, but can provide links for you to check out in your leisure. This isn't a site to debate what is standard and what isn't. If the parents are AKC German Shepherd, you've got a GSD no matter what color or coat it is.

"The long coat gene has been in the breed from the beginning": White and Long Coat Shepherd Society

The standard for German Shepherd Dog: AKC

German Shepherd breed types and characteristics: NorthWest K9

Different colors and coats: 4GSD (the coat differences are toward the bottom of the long page.)

History of the GSD: GermanShepherd (this is definitely worth a read!)

This is a page in progress, and as I uncover more links to educate on the different coats, I will add them to this page.

Thank you for looking, I hope you enjoy the pictures and products in
